Antikythira (Antikythera) mechanism. Fragments of a mechanism consisting of 32 gear wheels and plaques bearing inscriptions relating to the signs of the zodiac and the months, probably an astrolabe. This ancient mechanical computer is the oldest known scientific calculator. Bronze, ca. 150-100 BCE. Found on a shipwreck off the island of Antikythira.
