Obelisk of Theodosius or Egyptian Obelisk (Dikilitas in Turkish). The obelisk is the upper third of an Egyptian obelisk erected in Deir el Bahari (opposite Thebes) by Pharaoh Thutmose III in ca 1490-1435 BCE to celebrate his campaigns in Syria and his crossing of the Euphrates River. The base was created at the time of the erection of the obelisk in Costantinople commissioned by Emperor Theodosius in 390 CE. The carvings on the base depict the Emperor and his family in the Kathisma while the look at various events.
