Supernatural spirits and a sacred tree. Stone panel from the North-West Palace of Ashurnasirpal II (Room I), Nimrud (ancient Kalhu), northern Iraq. Neo-Assyrian, 883-859 BCE. These figures with wings may possibly be supernatural creatures known as apkallu. The stylized tree usually called a Sacred Tree or even, misleadingly, a Tree of Life. It bears some distant relationship to the palm-tree. 111.76 x 162.56 cm. AN 124583.
