Birchbark container. Northern Athapaskan, 1860s. From British Columbia, Canada. One of the earliest of its kind to be collected. Birchbark, with the rough exterior of the bark facing the inside. The rim is made of wood; stitched with split root; thong handles made from animal skin. It has been suggested that the geometric design of chevron-like bands mimics porcupine quillwork. H. 20 cm. Inv. ET Am.1566.
