Bowl of a spoon probably made from the breast plate of a great auk. It was originally fitted with a handle, now lost. It may be the earliest object created by a named Native American, as described by Hans Sloane: 'An Indian spoon made of the breast bone of a pinquin made anno 1702. Made by Papenau an Indian...' This spoon was one of the earliest surviving Native articles to be collected from New England. They were acquired by John Winthrop (1681-1747), the botanist and correspondent of Hans Sloane. Inv. ET Am,SL.1730.
