West front, Wells cathedral. The present church was begun ca. 1175, to be consecrated in 1239. The Early English West front was built by Thomas Norrey. The Gothic West towers are the work of William de Wynford and were completed in 1403. The whole façade measure 160 ft. and housed originally 400 sculptures (300 survive today).
