Standing figure of a bodhisattva. Kushan, Gandhara, Pakistan. Grey schist. c.2nd - 3rd century. Bodhisattva ('one whose essence or being is knowledge') defer final Englightenment in order to dedicate their lives to the welfare of all beings. Most standing bodhisattva of this type from Gandhara hold their hands in abhayamudra (the gesture of reassurance). It is likely that his right hand was in that pose.
