Anonymous, 16th century
A Carmelite monk attempts to convert Hatuey, a Taino (Kacik) chief, to Christanity just before his execution by burning at stake on February 2, 1512. Hatuey who was from Santo Domingo had fled to Cuba to organize indigenous resistance against the conquistadores, but was captured and killed. Engraving. From the Chronicle of Bartolome des Las Casas, bishop of Chiapas. 1552.
