Petra was the capital and royal city of the Nabataeans, a semi-nomadic, Arab people who dominated the silk-and spice trade across the deserts. ed-Dir, Petra's largest monument, is on a plateau 800 steps above the city. From the 4th century onwards it was used as a monastery.
