The Penance of Jane Shore in St. Paul's Church. Ca. 1793. Pen and ink and watercolour finished with size on paper, 24.5 x 29.5 cm. Jane Shore was a mistress of King Edward IV. After his death in 1483 she was imprisoned in the Tower of London and accused of being a harlot by the future Richard III. The Ecclesiastical Court condemned her to do public penance in St Paul’s Cathedral. Presented by the executors of W. Graham Robertson through the Art Fund 1949 (N05898).
