The Witham Shield. Iron Age, La Tène period, ca. 400-300 BCE. The decoration on the shield is one of the best examples of the way British craftspeople adopted the new style of La Tène art. The shadow of the shape of a boar remains as a different colour in the patina on the front of the shield. Found in the Witham, River. Repoussé, inlaid, engraved; coral, copper alloy. Length: 109.22 cm (3ft 7ins). 1872,1213.1.
