MEXICO, the Tro-Cortesianus or Madrid codex combines the codex Troano and Cortesiano: it is only one codex; facsimile Matev-Madrid 1930; Maya culture. Black god holding a spear and a stick used to project his dart. The other god looking like a serpent is eating astronomy signs (glyphs). This scene takes place during a storm and the Destroying god and his ally, the Serpent, break down the Astronomy signs: this scene symbolized a complete change of weather. A great number of Maya gods are only named by letters and their characteristics are symbols. Lines and dots are numbers, often elements of the calendar.  Above, glyphs: writing system where certain glyphs express concepts, others syllables. This codex is made of horoscopes and calendars in order to assist the priests in their predictions and ceremonies.  Coll. Mexico General Archive.
