Ko-Pe-Ley/Moqui, 1898. The Hopi priest Ko-Pe-Ley has the black paint on the upper parts of his face representing heavy rain clouds, while the white around his mouth stands for purity and faith. Eagle feathers, used in the ceremony to soothe the snakes, adorn his hair. Oil on canvas, 37.5 x 48.3 cm (14 3/4 x 19 in.). Restricted gift of Mrs. Herbert A. Vance in honor of James N. Wood, 2004.9.
