MEXICO, the Tro-Cortesianus or Madrid codex combines the codex Troano and Cortesiano: it is only one codex; facsimile Matev-Madrid 1930; Maya culture. To the left, a god “D” sitting and holding a honey bread; in front of him, a lady offering him another honey bread; this bread could be poisoned as there is a serpent on the floor and, next to the serpent, two signs on a “bag”: one sign, “CIMI”, represents Death; the other sign “AHAU” means the Lord of Death. A great number of Maya gods are only named by letters and their characteristics are symbols. In the center, lines and dots are numbers, often elements of the calendar. Above them, glyphs: writing system where certain glyphs express concepts, others syllables. This codex is made of horoscopes and calendars in order to assist the priests in their predictions and ceremonies. Coll. Mexico General Archive.
