Child's coat, back. Canada, Eastern woodlands, Montagnais people, 18th CE. The Montagnais-Naskapi hunters wore flamboyant dresses painted by their women with curvilinear motifs inspired by the dreams of their husbands to show their respect for the caribous so that they would allow themselves to be hunted in exchange for a propitious ritual. This unusually refined boy's vest might have been offered as a gift to the French partners. Pained leather, repoussé, 57 x 47 x 5 cm. Inv. 71.1934.33.10 D. Photo: Patrick Gries.
