The church was erected by name of Santa Maria Madre di Dio, beginning in 639 CE and enlarged a first time in 826. In 1008 the church was rebuilt and renamed Sant Maria Assunta (Assumption of the Virgin). The building preserves the typical early-christian scheme: a central basilica with narthex, to which a baptistery was added (only traces remain). On the side survives the martyrion dedicated to Saint Fosca. 11th CE with additions of 13th CE. Central marble portal with remnants from around 1000 CE.
