Black and white Sept. 08,1883 image of a Northern Pacific Railroad steam locomotive and train, a part of the Gold Spike Excursion that traveled from St. Paul, MN, via Gold Creek, MT, to Portland, OR, and thence to Tacoma, W.T. The locomotive and train are decorated in U.S. flags, bunting, and greenery. A group of several men and 2 boys stand near the locomotive, the engineer leans out of the engine cab, and 2 men in suits stand on the engine running board. Although often identified as being in the photograph, Henry Villard is not in this photograph.
