The Standard of Ur. From Ur, southern Iraq, about 2600-2400 BCE. The main panels are known as 'War' and 'Peace'. This 'War' panel shows one of the earliest representations of a Sumerian army. Chariots, each pulled by four donkeys, trample enemies; infantry with cloaks carry spears. Wood, inlaid lapis lazuli, shell, red limestone, bitumen, 21.70 x 50.30 x 11.6/5.6 (top/base) cm.
