Fredrick William of Brandenburg (the "Great Elector") commissioned numerous portraits of himself during the forty-eight years of his rule (r. 1640-88). This portrait was executed roughly halfway through his reign and was made after a tournament in which Frederick William participated in the town of Cleves (Kleve).
