Anonymous, 14th century
School of Prague: The Mühlhausener Altar (also called Prague Altar), open state. Ca. 1385. Three Bohemian saints (from ltr): Vitus (as martyr with palm frond and Imperial orb); Wenzeslas (as Duke in chainmail armor with Bohemian Imperial Eagle on banner and shield), and Sigismund (as Emperor with sceptre and Imperial orb). From the Vitus Chapel in Mühlhausen near Stuttgart, Germany. Commissioned in 1380 by Reinhart von Mühlhausen in honor of his brother Eberhart who died in Prague. Canvas over wood panel, with original frame, 223.5 x 233.5 cm. Inv. 1038.
