Tlaxcala codex called also Lienzo de Tlaxcala, private coll., facsimile dated 1892, called also Colombina edition; note that the original codex has disappeared and that only facsimiles, called Colombina edition, exist. Scene n° 72(detail): Tlaxichco. Battle where the Spaniards are helped by their allies, the Tlaxcaltecs, while Cortes’s lieutenant, Nuño de Guzman, leads the battle. Tlaxcaltec etendards are decorated with quetzal feathers, the sacred bird. To the left, the Spaniards helped by the Tlaxcaltec Indians. To the right, Indian enemies. The first part (up to scene n°48) tells the story of the Conquest while Cortès is allied with the Tlaxcaltec Indians, the Aztec enemies. The second part has few comments: it describes the period just after the Conquest and the fall of Tenochtitlan-Mexico, the Aztec capital city; the Spaniards between 1523 - 1541 extend their territory down to Guatemala and toward the West, battling against Indian tribes.
