Codex Borbonicus (aztec/mexica codex), detail, circa 1519-1540. Facsimile, Ernest Leroux Edition, 1899. The codex is surrounded by blue water. To the right, Xolotl, god belonging to the group of Quetzalcoatl, the Feather Serpent; coming out of his mouth and in his hand, a « tecpatl », sacrifice stone knife. To the left, the low Sun, Tlalchitonatiuh, "between light and darkness"; a solar disc covers his body. Xolotl is the god of twins: they were believed to be monsters and one of them should always be killed ritually; this is why he is represented with a knife in his hand.
