"Bahram Gur Entertained by the Daughters of Barzin", Folio from a Shahnama (Book of Kings). Author: Abu'l Qasim Firdausi (935-1020). Folio from an illustrated manuscript. 1300-1330. Northwestern Iran or Baghdad, Islamic. This scene from the First Small Shahnama takes place around the pool in the garden of a squire named Barzin. Bahram Gur lost his favorite black falcon and during his search for it he came to Barzin's estate, where he was entertained by Barzin's three delightful daughters-a harpist, a singer, and a dancer-all of whom he took with him as his wives. Ink, opaque watercolor, silver, and gold on paper. Text block: 6 3/16 x 4 13/16 in. (15.7 x 12.2 cm) Painting: 2 3/8 x 4 3/4 in. (6 x 12.1 cm). Rogers Fund, 1969 (69.74.6).
