Gainsborough, Thomas (1727-1788)
Musidora, Ca. 1780-8. The only large-scale nude that Gainsborough ever painted. It remained unfinished. The title probably refers to the nymph Musidora who represented ‘Summer’ in a popular 18th century poem, The Seasons, by James Thomson. Oil paint on canvas, 1880 x 1530 mm. Presented by Robert Vernon 1847 (N00308).
