Carved elephant tusk. Sapi Culture, Sherbro, Sierra Leone. Arrived in Europe in the first half of 16th CE. According to Ezio Bassani this olifant had been commissioned by a Sapi chief and is similar to models made on behalf of the Portuguese by African ivory cavers, hence the similarities to sapi-portuguese ivories with their structure of African trumps (lateral openings, absense of suspension rings). Carved ivory, L. 79 cm. Inv. 71.1933.6.4 D. Photo: Hughes Dubois.
