Anthropomorphic gelede mask. Nigeria, Yoruba people. Made by Amidou Dossou (1965-) in 1988-1989 for the exhibition "Les Magiciens de la Terre" in Paris (1989). Gelede is a mask society (mascarade) dedicated to the spiritual powers of older women designated by the expression "our mothers". This mask was used during the main nocturnal mascarade.
