Djulwarak (20th CE) © Copyright: Landscape animated by "dua" fauna. The Aboriginal artist is from the Nothern Territories, Arnhem Land, Milingimbi community. Two pythons represent the sacred serpent Yurlunggur, two praying mantis "wandjuk" or "waralawarala", two palm trees, and a wallaby. The points around the trees represent gravel, those on the upper right edible grains. The rays stand for grass in which wild carrots grow. The composition is inspired by myths of the Wawilak sisters. Painting on eucalyptus bark, 79 x 47.5 cm. Inv. 72.1964.9.40. Photo: Hervé Lewandowski.
