This type of sculpture is erected over the tomb of a deceased person among the groups of minority populations in the mountaneous regions of Vietnam for one year, the time it takes for the deceased to leave the earth and to become an ancestor. They are abandoned after a ceremony of the so-called second funeral. This example dates from a cemetary dated about 1910. Maker: Frantz Laforest. Wood, 145 x 29 x 28.5 cm. 71.1956.44.1.
