The Habana Carring Basque Child Refugees. After the bombing of Guernica in April 1937, the Basque Government appealed to foreign nations to give temporary asylum to the children, but the British government adhered to its policy of non-intervention. The Duchess of Atholl however urged the government to rethink its position and permission was finally granted. On 21st May, nearly 4,000 children left for Southampton on the Habana, a ship designed to carry 800 passengers. Daily Herald Archive.
