The German field marshall Paul von Hindenburg (m) has a cup of coffee in the spa town of Bad Kreuznach in Rhineland-Palatinate with leading officers of the headquarters in Summer 1917 on the occasion of Emperor Wilhelm II.'s reception of Nuncius Pacelli (later Pope Pius XII), who delivered the Pope's peace negotiation suggestions. The town Bad Kreuznach was the main German headquarters in 1917 and 1918. Hindenburg and Ludendorff commanded the German army from Bad Kreuznach.
