WW I - Gas Warfare. German warning sign in Armentieres, France, reading: 'Attention! Danger of Gas! Armentieres contaminated with Gelbkreuz (Yellow Cross)! Do not enter houses or dugouts! Do not use water for drinking and washing! A.O.K.G.' The term 'Yellow Cross' (also: mustard gas) identitfied a skin damaging chemical warfare agent. The name of the gas derived from the artillery shells that carried the chemicals, which were painted with yellow crosses. Photo: Berliner Verlag/Archiv
