Bowl with foot (poison test), by Caspar (Kaspar) Widmann (before 1554-1590), goldsmith. Nuremberg, Germany, 1556-1558. The head of a seal at center, made of agate, was considered to come from an ancient Egyptian tomb and allegedly helped identify a poisonous substance in a drink. The handle, made of chalcedony, is likely to be of the late antique period and was completed with gilded silver to form the shape of a resting lion. Silver, gilde, agate, chalcedony, narwhal tusk, H 8,1 cm, L with handle 26 cm, diam. top 18,0 cm, diam. foot 9,0 cm, 566 g. Inv. IV 321. Photo: Paul Kuchel.
