Our Lady of Valvanera. Ca. 1770-80. Unknown Cuzco Artist, Peru, second half of 18th Century. Peruvian (Cuzco). This painting depicts the miraculous discovery of the image of Our Lady of Valvanera by the repentant thief-turned-hermit Nuño Oñez, who kneels beside it in adoration. Hidden in the hollow of an oak tree since the time of the Muslim invasion of Spain, the location of the sacred image was revealed to the hermit in a vision. Oil and gold on canvas, 80 1/16 × 95 7/8 in. (203.4 × 243.5 cm). Gift of James Kung Wei Li in memory of Ambassador and Mme Ti-Tsun Li, Republic of China, 2018 (2018.652.3).
