Flemish school: The Battle of Lepanto, 7 October 1571. The Loss of Cyprus in 1571 provoked a reaction of the Ligue of Christian nations led by Don Juan of Austria (1547-1578) who sent a fleet or more than 200 Venetian and Spanish battleships as wells as a Papal and Genoese squadron in to the Gulf of Lepanto (today Naupaktos, Greece) where they encoutned the Turkish fleet. Oil on canvas.
