Schaffner, Martin (1478/79-1546/49)
Wing of a Plague altarpiece from the Augustinian Monastery Wengen in Ulm. Ca. 1513/14. The panels show an angry God the Father punishing sinful mankind with plague arrows. The sufferers send their prayers to God not directly, but through the mediation of intercessionaries. With the aid of the saints the arrows break and fall harmlessly to the ground. Painting on fir wood, 167,8 x 49,8 cm. Inv. Gm1103_Gm1104. Photo: Jürgen Musolf. On loan from the Bavarian State Picture Collections Munich.
