Lawrence, Jacob (1917-2000) © ARS, NY
The Life of Frederick Douglass, 1939. Panel 30: During the exodus, thousands of poor negroes left the South in search of better country. Douglass spoke of this movement at the Social Science Congress at Saratoga, New York. "The habit of roaming from place to place is never a good one until a man has endeavored to make his immediate surroundings in accord with his wishes. The business of this government is to protect its citizens where they are, and not send them where they do not need protection." Casein tempera on hardboard, 12 x 17 7/8".
