The Sloane Astrolabe. England, ca. 1300. One of the earliest known European astrolabes. The star pointers for the rete are zoomorphic (animal-shaped), mostly in the form of a dog's head or a dragon's head. The tips of the animals' tongues form the actual pointers. The three latitude plates are laid out for six different latitudes between 48° 30' N and 54° N. Only one city is mentioned: 'Lundoniarum' (London) on the plate for 52° E. The alidade and the ruler are missing. Diam. 46 cm. Inv. M&ME Sloane 54.
