Ivory panel showing an archangel. Byzantine, 525-550 CE. From Constantinople, perhaps an imperial commission. Originally part of a diptych, the leaf is the largest surviving Byzantine ivory panel. The Greek inscription at the top may be translated as: 'Receive the suppliant before you, despite his sinfulness'. 42.8 x 14.3 x 0.9 cm. Inv. PY OA.9999.
