Gorgon. From the large Temple of Apollo at Cyrene. Archaic Greek, 6th BCE. Marble, 131 x 82cm. Formerly an acroterion (ornament atop the pediment of the temple). Metal parts are lost. During the byzantine era the sculpture was transformed into a fountain.
