The Stupa of Swayambunath, one of the world's most important stupas, is a Buddhist pilgrimage site on the Swayambu Hill, Neware Valley, near Kathmandu, founded in the 6th BCE. The current structure dates from the 14th CE with later restorations. On the square base are the eyes of Buddha, who sees but does not speak, surmounted by a torana (column or square spire) composed of 13 gilded metal rings symbolising the 13 steps of knowledge. Atop a parasol symbol of majesty.
