Zen Garden, Tenryu-ji Temple, Kyoto. The original temple was built in 1339-43 by the shogun Ashikaga Takauji in memory of Emperor Go-Daigo, to venerate Gautama Buddha. It has suffered eight major fires in five centuries. The garden is the only part that retains the original 14th century design. It is the head temple of the Tenryu sect of Rinzai Zen Buddhism.
