Torii Gate, Tenryu-ji Temple, Kyoto. The original temple was built in 1339-43 by the shogun Ashikaga Takauji in memory of Emperor Go-Daigo, to venerate Gautama Buddha. It has suffered eight major fires in five centuries. The buildings standing today were built in the late 19th-early 20th century imitating earlier architectural styles. It is the head temple of the Tenryu sect of Rinzai Zen Buddhism.
