Hand of Daibutsu. Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall), Todai-ji (Great Eastern Temple), Nara. Bronze, 748-51, Nara period. This colossal statue depicts the Buddha Variocana (Dainichi Nyorai in Japanese), the Cosmic Buddha, sitting on a lotus throne. In Chinese and Japanese Buddhism this type of Buddha is seen as the depiction of the concept of shunyata, or emptiness.
