The Burghers of Calais, 1884-1895. The sculptural group was commissioned to Rodin by the city of Calais in 1884. It represents the sacrifice of Eustache de Saint Pierre and five fellow citizens that offered themselves to Edward III of England to spare Calais during the siege of the city by the English in 1347. Bronze, 217 x 255 x 177 cm. Inv. S.450.
