Silver 50 cents. Canada. In 1858 the first truly Canadian coins appeared, denominated in dollars and cents, as in the United States, rather than in the pounds, shillings and pence in use in Britain. This silver 50 cent piece was issued in 1870, shortly after Canada had become a British dominion, with its own government headed by a Canadian prime minister and the British monarch as head of state. This status is reflected on the coin, which bears the Queen's head on its front. Canadian coins were minted in Britain until 1908, when production moved to Ottawa. Inv. CM 1945,0901.110.
