Ivory pyxis with St. Menas, Early Byzantine, Alexandria, 6th CE. This small pyxis or box shows two scenes from the life of St Menas, a semi-legendary Egyptian soldier martyred in the late third century. The box came from the Early Christian church of S. Paolo fuori le Mura in Rome, Italy. Ivory, h. 7.9 cm; diam. 11.9 cm. PE 1879.1220.1.
