Icon of St George, from Lod, Israel, mid 13th CE. This icon was made in the eastern Mediterranean at the time of the Crusades. The small figure seated behind St George can be identified with a figure from a legend connected with the Crusades: a young Christian captured by Saracens from Mytilene on the island of Lesbos. According to the legend, the boy was held on Crete and forced into servitude. In the very act of handing a glass to one of his captors, he was swept up and rescued by St George and returned to his home. St George is shown here putting a protective arm around the boy, who still holds a glass of liquid. Egg tempera and gold leaf over a prepared pine panel, 18.8 x 26.8 cm. PY 1984,0601.1.
