Stonyhurst Salt Cellar, made by John Robinson (?). London, 1577-1578. Ruby, rock crystal, garnet, enamel and silver-gilt, maiolica, stamped, gilded, enamelled, chased and cabochon cut, diam. 9.4 cm, h. 26.3 cm. This elaborate ‘salt’ is richly decorated with medieval rock crystals and gemstones of the 13th to 15th CE that were destroyed at the Reformation. PY 1958,1004.1.
