Siege of Vera Cruz March 1847. By the U.S. Army and Navy. The bombardment commenced on the 22nd of March at 4 1/4 O'clock P.M. and was incessant day and night until the morning of the 26th at which time overtures were made by the enemy for a capitulation of the City and also of the Castle of San Juan de Ulloa (the Gibraltar of America). On the 27th the garrisons of both City and Castle surrendered as prisoners of war to the victorious arms of the United States.
