Wooden guardian figure crowned by antlers made of dry lacquer. China, Eastern Zhou, 4th-3rd BCE. Wooden figures with monstruous faces, long tongues and antlers were placed as guardians inc Chu tombs in southern Henan and northern Hubei. This is one of very few such artefacts surviving today.
